Chaplin Shorebirds Tour starts in Chaplin, SK at 11:00 AM.
Participants departing Saskatoon, Moose Jaw, Regina or Swift Current should meet tour leader at Chaplin.
Saskatoon participants may meet leader at 8:00 am at Wild Birds Unlimited parking lot in Saskatoon.
The tour ends near Herbert, SK about 6 pm.

Estimated Return Driving Distance from Saskatoon: 600 km

Self-Drive Birding Tour

  • Extended Day Trip from Saskatoon visiting best shorebird habitats in Saskatchewan at Chaplin Shorebird Reserve and nearby hotspots including Reed Lake.
  • Endangered Piping Plover is often found here.
  • Other shorebirds and waders often include White-faced Ibis, Red Knot (spring), Sanderling, Wilson’s Phalarope, Red-necked Phalarope, American Avocet, Black-necked Stilt, Marbled Godwit, Hudsonian Godwit, Stilt Sandpiper, Least Sandpiper, Baird’s Sandpiper, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, Short-billed Dowitcher, Lesser Yellowlegs, Willet, Solitary Sandpiper, Spotted Sandpiper, Black-bellied Plover, Semipalmated Plover, Killdeer.
  • Possible Grassland birds include Upland Sandpiper, Long-billed Curlew, Lark Bunting, Baird’s Sparrow, Chestnut-collared Longspur, Western Meadowlark.

Suggested items to Bring:

  • Clothes suitable for the weather (rain jacket, sun hat, etc.)
  • Water bottle
  • Binoculars and camera (optional)

Private Full Day Tour Fee: CAD $890 (about US $670) for groups of 1 – 3 persons Taxes included.
Fee includes guiding services only for day trip.  Client supplies their own transportation in personal or rented vehicle. Meals, transportation and accommodation are NOT included.
Save $200. If you have room in a non-smoking vehicle to transport leader from Saskatoon and back.

Public Full Day Group Tour Fee: CAD $690 (about US $520) for groups of 1 – 3 persons Taxes included.
Fee includes guiding services only for day trip.  Client supplies their own transportation in personal or rented vehicle. Meals, transportation and accommodation are NOT included.
Save $200. If you have room in a non-smoking vehicle to transport leader from Saskatoon and back.

TAX RECEIPT: A tax receipt for 50% of the tour fee will be issued to the person paying for the tour.

Piping Plover by Nick Saunders

Piping Plovers are an endangered species in Saskatchewan. They can be identified by their sandy brown back and single neck band.

Conservation measures to protect Piping Plovers include Nature Saskatchewan’s Plovers on Shore program.

Covid Safety Policy on Tours

  1. Your tour leader is fully vaccinated.
  2. Clients must normally drive themselves in their own personal or rented vehicle. The leader will usually drive in a separate vehicle. We will use cell phones to communicate between each other during the tour.
  3. This policy may change when public health orders change or when Covid case numbers decrease.
  4. Please contact us before booking tour if you have any special requests with regard to this policy. In certain cases, if requested, leader may be willing to ride in client’s vehicle or drive client’s vehicle.

Can I bring my pet dog on this tour?

Dogs are permitted on private tours provided they are kept on a leash and not let outside of your vehicle at birding stops. Dogs are not permitted on group tours.
