Our Advocacy Projects

Over the years, we have recognized the need for proactive protection in high-risk areas for wildlife. In response to the challenges facing our wildlife, we grew our advocacy projects. From lending our voices to wildlife to actively protecting the spaces they rely on, wildlife rehabilitation is only part of what we do.

Advocacy project: Poisoned Pigeons

For many years, we had a wonderful woman who took in our injured and orphaned pigeons. She was amazing at going all over the city, helping with “nuisance” birds, giving information and advice, and advocating for these maligned but intelligent birds.

Beavers in the City

We began advocating for the use of non-lethal management of the beavers along our beautiful river after a young beaver escaped into the river. As we toured the riverbanks each morning in the coming weeks, we met many interesting people. Unfortunately, one of them was a man who was paid to lethally trap these animals at their lodges.

Rozol Use for Richardson’s Ground Squirrels

Poison does not discriminate, and when it’s placed in areas where prey species are abundant, and predators are drawn to the area, secondary poisoning is a ticking time bomb waiting to wreak havoc.

Poison use for Richardson’s ground squirrel population control has been a consistent problem, with more instances of secondary poisoning continuing to rise.

We have received hundreds of birds that flew into windows and were injured or died from the impact. In response, we created a partnership with several other organizations called “B. I.R.D.S.” Birds In Real Danger, Saskatoon.
