Where to find Signs of Spring?

Tour Description – Signs of Spring Birding Tour

Experience the sights and songs of birdlife during springtime on the prairies.

Join us for a 3-hour leisurely driving tour along back roads near Saskatoon, Canada to look for signs of spring in the form of newly arriving birds returning to nest in our region. Great for a family outing. During this signs of spring tour, your leader will identify the birds and discuss their fascinating natural history.

Great Mother’s Day gift, Easter gift, Birthday gift, Anniversary gift or Retirement gift.

Both novice and experienced bird watchers are welcome. A loaner pair of binoculars may be available if requested. The leader will bring a spotting scope to allow you to view the birds under high magnification.

This tour is ideal for low-mobility clients because they may remain in their vehicle during this driving tour.

We expect to find different birds depending upon the date of the signs of spring tour. Some of the special birds we hope to find include:

Early April: Snow Goose, Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Northern Shrike, Mountain Bluebird,  Horned Lark, American Tree Sparrow, Western Meadowlark.

Late April: Snow Goose, Cackling Goose, Ross’s Goose, White-fronted Goose, Tundra Swan, ducks, grebes, Sandhill Crane, Killdeer, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel, Mountain Bluebird, Horned Lark, Western Meadowlark, Red-winged Blackbird.

May: Tundra Swan, ducks, grebes, Mourning Dove, Sandhill Crane, American Avocet, Willet, Swainson’s Hawk, Loggerhead Shrike, Tree Swallow, Mountain Bluebird, Savannah Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Western Meadowlark.

Suggested items to Bring:

  • Clothes suitable for the weather (rain coat, hat, walking shoes, etc.)
  • Water bottle
  • Binoculars and camera or spotting scope (optional)
  • Ensure your vehicle has a full gas tank

TOUR FEE – Signs of Spring Birding Tour

Private Escorted Tour Fee: $190 per vehicle for family groups of 1 to 5 persons on the day of your choice. Fee covers expert guiding services during the 3-hour tour. Meals, transportation and accommodation are NOT included. Taxes included. It is possible to combine this tour with the Dancing Grouse private tour.

Public Afternoon Group Escorted Tour Fee:  $75 per person. Maximum 6 vehicles. If more than 2 people are travelling in a single vehicle, their total fee is just $190. Unlike the above private tours, this option may have several families travelling in a convoy with each family in their own vehicle. This option available only from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm on May 11, 2025. Fee covers expert guiding services during the 3-hour tour. Meals, transportation and accommodation are NOT included. Taxes included.

Mother’s Day Afternoon Group Escorted Tour Fee:  $75 per person. Maximum 6 vehicles. If more than 2 people are travelling in a single vehicle, their total fee is just $190. Unlike the above private tours, this option may have several families travelling in a convoy with each family in their own vehicle. This option available only from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm on May 11, 2025. Fee covers expert guiding services during the 3-hour tour. Meals, transportation and accommodation are NOT included. Taxes included.

TAX RECEIPT: A tax receipt for 50% of the tour fee will be issued to the person paying for the tour provided payment is made by e-transfer to LSWR@sasktel.net.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Refunds less a $50 administration fee will be given if cancellation notice received 14 days before date of tour.
No refunds if cancellation notice received less than 14 days before date of tour unless another client takes your place.

Covid Safety Policy on Tours

  1. Your tour leader is fully vaccinated.
  2. Clients must normally drive themselves in their own personal or rented vehicle. The leader will normally drive in a separate vehicle. We will use cell phones to communicate between each other during the tour.
  3. This policy may change when public health orders change or when Covid case numbers decrease.
  4. Please contact us before booking tour if you have any special requests with regard to this policy. In certain cases if requested, leader may be willing to ride in client’s vehicle.
