On the recommendation of Edgar Dewdney, Lieutenant-Governor of the North-West Territories, this Last Mountain Lake Bird Sanctuary was set aside in 1887 by the government of Sir John A MacDonald (Canada’s first prime minister) for the protection of wildfowl, the first such reserve on the North American continent.
Join our experienced local birding guide for a 3 hour driving tour to visit some of the best bird-rich hotspots in the Saskatoon region in and near Blackstrap Lake Provincial Park. We will visit deep water regions for viewing diving ducks and pelicans. We will also visit shallow ponds for observing dabbling ducks, grebes and wetland sparrows, rails and other marsh birds. Over 175 bird species may be found here between May and September.
